"Wouldn't it be better to focus on just one thing?"
It's a question I've heard often, and frankly, one I've asked myself. But I've come to believe one's true value isn't limited to a single skill, achievement, or experience. It's a complex weave of ambitions, struggles, principles and traits that truly defines a person's character and potential. So, instead of a traditional monologue on achievements, I'll share my story, which answers that very question.
Most people are told that they will find their true calling at some point in their lives, but I don't seem to have found one. Instead, I have found several meaningful callings.
When I was 7, I wanted to become a Disney Cartoonist.
At 12, a Bharatanatyam dancer.
At 14, a fashion designer (thanks to all the Barbie movies).
At 15, an Architect.
At 19, a Writer, as I was and still am, an avid reader.
But at 21, I graduated with a degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering and subsequently realised that I did not want to pursue a career in it.
Having multiple interests, all rooted in creativity and art, I realised I would not be satisfied unless I could combine them under one roof. So, I chose marketing as a career that includes storytelling, research, analysis, psychology, and, of course, fun.
Six months into two contract roles at an early-stage startup and accelerator, I realised I knew little about marketing. So, to gain a holistic view, I pursued my master's in business at the University of Queensland, specialising in marketing. I also added innovation and entrepreneurship to the list, wanting to work in startups.
This was a turning point because I had to juggle consulting work, research projects, internships, and studies, which made me realise I was a good multi-tasker, a fast learner, and a resilient human being.
However, finding a stable, full-time role after graduation proved challenging, mainly due to the uncertainties brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. So, I embraced every opportunity that came my way: consulting gigs on product discovery, building product communities, strategising go-to-market plans for various startups, and even almost starting a sustainability-tech startup. With this, I was also upskilling in UX/UI design, business analytics, and product management.
Thus began my "squiggly career," a journey of diverse experiences sprinkled with layoffs and international transitions (back and forth between Australia and India), which was often driven by necessity rather than choice.
But, you might still ask, "Why not specialise?" My answer is this: the ability to draw ideas from different fields, strategise with them, understand the human element in every task/project and drive the execution towards success is my specialisation. In a world that demands adaptability and a broad perspective, my multi-faceted expertise isn't a liability – it's my greatest strength.
